Myanmar Muslims should not be forgotten: cleric

TEHRAN, Oct. 29 (MNA) – Senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi urged the Red Crescent officials in Qom not to let the issue of the displaced Muslim minority of Myanmar slide into oblivion.

“The fact is that the Muslims in Myanmar should not be forgotten because their problems have not been resolved yet,” said senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi.

The top cleric made the remarks on Sunday while meeting with local officials of Red Crescent Society of Iran in Qom.

The senior cleric regretted that the Rohingya Muslims are facing prosecution in their own country and displacement out of their country.

“If you want to wait to see how international organizations defend the Rohingya, you’ll never see them defending, because they are quick in reaction where their interests are in danger,” asserted Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi. “If their interests are not endangered, it does not make a difference for them even if you are wronged or the most wronged people in the world,” reiterated the grand Ayatollah.

“But we are Muslims and they are our religious brothers; it makes us responsible. We should get united,”

Since September, Red Crescent Society of Iran has been sending tons of humanitarian aid to Bangladesh where hundreds of thousands Rohingyas have been seeking refuge. The aid includes food, medicine and other basic items. Iran has called on other Muslim nations to press Myanmar to end the deadly crackdown against Rohingya Muslims.
